FILTRATION IN BRIEF

Description

The control of contamination in hydraulic systems is a vast and complex subject; here are some key points.

The function of the fluid in a hydraulic system is to transmit forces and movements.

To ensure the efficiency and reliability of the system, it is essential to consider the system requirements and operating conditions (operating pressure, ambient temperature, plant location, etc.) when choosing the fluid.

Depending on the required characteristics (viscosity, lubricating power, anti-wear protection, density, resistance to aging and thermal stresses, compatibility with materials, etc.), it is possible to choose from numerous mineral oils (the most used), synthetic fluids, water-based fluids, “ecological” fluids, etc.

All hydraulic fluids are classified according to international standards.

Solid contamination is recognized as the main cause of malfunction, failures, and premature degradation in hydraulic systems; it is impossible to eliminate it completely, but it can be effectively controlled with appropriate devices (filters).

Whatever fluid is used, it is essential that it be maintained at the level of solid contamination required by the most sensitive component used.
